SafeCut – Development of a handheld device for smart morcellation
We are proud to have supported our customer WISAP in the cost-optimised and production-oriented mechanical development of the SafeCut handheld device. Last week, the new product was presented to the public for the first time at MEDICA.
Based on an initial concept approach presented by WISAP to BUSSE Design+Engineering, the BUSSE team successfully developed a hybrid system consisting of reusable and disposable components. The focus was particularly on a consistent design-for-manufacturing strategy to ensure cost-effective production and high process reliability.
At the same time, the ergonomics of the device have been significantly improved thanks to an optimised housing design, enabling intuitive and safe handling in everyday clinical practice.
The system was developed not only using CAD, but also through the production and testing of prototypes. These were subjected to intensive functional testing by the customer and played a decisive role in rapidly developing the product idea into a device ready for series production. In addition to designing the mechanical components, BUSSE Design+Engineering also provided support in researching and selecting suitable manufacturers.
The SafeCut Morcellator is used in minimally invasive gynaecological surgery, such as hysterectomies, when the uterus needs to be removed. The hybrid design combines sterile disposable cutting tubes for maximum cutting performance with a reusable, durable motor. This results in less waste, lower costs per procedure and consistently high quality with every use.
The initial feedback at MEDICA was very positive, both in terms of application and design. We hope that the product will be a great success.
