Our HMI Lab – a testing ground for tomorrows operating concepts

In our HMI Lab, we bring usability, ergonomics and experience to life in real-world scenarios. Here, design, technology and interaction merge to create a unique laboratory that is actively shaping the future of human-machine interfaces.

The increasing technical complexity and connectivity of commercial vehicles, construction machinery, special-purpose vehicles and military vehicles presents new challenges for users, manufacturers and operators alike.

Functions are becoming more diverse, systems are interacting more closely with each other, and operation requires a high degree of clarity. To ensure that these complex technologies remain manageable for users, a structured approach to the development of human-machine interfaces (HMI) is essential. This is exactly where the BUSSE HMI Lab comes in.

Simulation with the Motion Platform

The focus is on our motion platform, which can simulate not only generic driving situations, but also specific vehicles, terrain profiles, movement patterns and sequence scenarios in a realistic manner. This allows operating concepts to be tested under authentic conditions – whether in urban contexts, off-road use, with wheels or track drive.

Configurable armrests, control panels and hardware components

Our lab is designed for maximum flexibility:

Freely assignable armrests and modular control panels for seated and standing workstations enable the integration of a wide variety of hardware components.
From snap-in and push-button controls to buttons, rotary controls, joysticks and jog dials, our HMI Lab is equipped with components from renowned manufacturers – everything can be variably installed, moved, recombined and tested live.
We dont just locate control elements, we also actively design and ergonomically adapt them as needed so that operation is optimally tailored to users, use cases and usage scenarios.
Our lab is complemented by screens in a wide range of sizes that can be mounted in a variety of positions to specifically test viewing angles, distances and accessibility.

Rapid prototyping with Arduino & smart click dummies

With Arduino, we can quickly connect hardware components and link them to interactive click dummies.

We use tools such as Figma, Protopie and Axure to create intelligent click dummies with conditions, logic and processes.
This results in hybrid prototypes that represent both physical controls and digital interactions – an ideal basis for early testing, evaluation and optimisation.

Human-centred design as a guideline

Our approach is based on the human-centred design process:

We analyse the most important use cases and user groups,
develop operating concepts consistently from the users perspective,
and refine them step by step through iterative testing in the lab.

This is how we ensure that the end result is solutions that are intuitive, ergonomic and optimised for real-life usage situations.

Use of the HMI Lab

The HMI Lab gives us the opportunity to actively test, design and experience the interplay of functionality, ergonomics, usability and user experience in our development projects. Together with our customers, we develop concepts that not only work, but also inspire enthusiasm in everyday use, create safety and improve interaction in the long term.

The HMI Lab can be rented from us on a daily basis as an experimental space, with or without our support, and can thus be used by our customers for their own developments and tests. Get in touch with us!
