What is a UX check?

A UX check, or expert review as it is technically known, is a user-centered development method for assessing and improving user-friendliness. Trained UX experts examine companies applications and products using recognized guidelines and standards to uncover potential weaknesses.

This method is characterized by its speed, cost efficiency and low effort. Without lengthy user studies, it provides well-founded findings that can be implemented quickly and in a targeted manner. As a result, a UX check also enables companies with limited resources to effectively optimize their products without having to sacrifice valuable usability insights.

In contrast to user surveys or tests, UX checks rely on the in-depth knowledge of experienced UX experts to identify optimization potential at an early stage.

Why are UX checks useful?

In today's digital world, a positive user experience (UX) is essential and often decisive for the success of a product. A well thought-out design that responds to the needs of users can make the difference between satisfaction and frustration.

UX checks offer a structured way to critically analyze user experiences and make targeted improvements. A key advantage is the early detection of usability problems before users encounter them. Two common methods are used here:

  • Cognitive walkthrough: UX experts take on the role of the user and run through typical tasks within a predefined scenario.

  • Heuristic evaluation: Analysis based on common usability principles, such as the 7 interaction principles (DIN EN ISO 9241-110) and Jakob Nielsen's ten usability heuristics as well as the heuristics for successful UX writing from the German UPA.

This proactive approach helps to minimize frustration and optimize interaction with the product.

UX checks at BUSSE

  • 7 interaction principles (ISO EN DIN 9241-110)

  • Heuristics for successful UX writing from the German UPA

  • Design laws from the psychology of perception (law of proximity, similarity, closeness)

We use a four-stage rating system to identify usability problems:

  • Serious: Critical problems with significant negative consequences that should be resolved urgently.

  • Moderate: Problems that significantly impair usability and should be prioritized.

  • Minor: Cosmetic problems with low priority.

  • Positive: Aspects that work well and should be maintained.

This well-founded approach provides important insights that can be directly translated into meaningful measures for product optimization.

Efficiency and cost-effectiveness

A decisive advantage of UX checks is their fast and resource-saving implementation. As no users are required for testing, problems can be identified and rectified at an early stage. This is particularly beneficial in the early phases of a project when time and budget are limited.

What happens after the UX check?

After a UX check has been carried out, the results include:

  • Identification of the strengths of the current design

  • Documentation of the identified UX problems with comprehensible justification

  • Severity rating to prioritize the problems

  • Concrete recommendations for optimization

  • Best practice examples for illustration

These findings form a valuable basis for further optimization of the design.
