Industrial design, UI/UX design, and construction for the new SeeLyra™ femtosecond laser by Bausch + Lomb

We are very pleased that our client Bausch + Lomb has successfully presented their new SeeLyra™ femtosecond laser to the public at the ESCRS in London.

A very extensive project, which we were able to accompany from the first concepts to series launch, fills our entire team with great pride: From industrial design and housing construction to software and interaction design, we were able to contribute our interdisciplinary expertise.

Mobile and flexibly deployable in the operating room.

The particular challenge of this project was developing a system that adapts to the space rather than defining it. Eye surgery with the femtosecond laser is teamwork. Doctors and assistants share the system with different tasks and different rights. Space in the operating room is limited, the process is timed.

Agilely developed according to medical device standards.

The development took place according to the relevant standards for medical devices in a continuously agile process. On the BUSSE side, all four specialist areas worked together: Industrial design, Industrial UX & HMI, Product Engineering, and Prototyping - always in close consultation with application experts, construction, software development, and project management of Bausch + Lomb.

The team tested the operating concept in extensive usability tests. Complex Axure click-dummies simulated real operating situations. In parallel, BUSSE considered the entire product lifecycle - from operation preparation through assembly, cleaning, and maintenance to system testing.

Result

A compact footprint and a dedicated transport position make the system mobile. Flexible installation configurations adapt it to the respective operating room.

The user interface guides through the workflow. A joystick and two touch displays share the operation. A permission system separates the roles of doctors and assistants. Guided work steps and comprehensive user guidance support a structured and comprehensible process. The system can be ergonomically adapted.
