The HARO ECG-seat is a medically approved product that can help to detect cardiac arrhythmia at an early stage by means of regular 6-channel resting ECG measurements. The risks can be significantly reduced by prompt treatment by a doctor. We were able to support Hamberger on the exciting journey of developing a medical product in the areas of usability, usability engineering, conception and design of the app and are extremely proud of the resulting product.
The HARO ECG Seat is an innovative toilet seat with integrated ECG sensors that unobtrusively monitors heart health. It uses an app to regularly measure heart rate and rhythm in order to detect irregularities such as atrial fibrillation - one of the most common cardiac arrhythmias, which often goes unnoticed and increases the risk of strokes.Thanks to state-of-the-art sensor technology and algorithms, this smart toilet seat enables continuous and precise health monitoring without the user having to wear additional devices or actively take measurements. The data can be viewed directly via the app and shared with a doctor if required.
The key advantage is that it is easy to use and suitable for everyday use: everyone uses the toilet several times a day, so the measurements can be seamlessly integrated into everyday life - without any additional effort. The HARO ECG Seat has been tested in a comprehensive medical study to ensure its accuracy and reliability. In collaboration with leading cardiologists, the results confirmed the high precision of the ECG measurements and the effective detection of atrial fibrillation.
The system was evaluated based on evidence and certified in accordance with the strict requirements of the Medical Device Regulation (MDR). This means that the toilet seat is an approved medical device that can be used both in clinical practice and in private households. Patients and doctors can rely on scientifically sound, high-quality technology.

Our contribution:
We at BUSSE Design were able to provide Hamberger Medical with conceptual and design support for an intuitive app based on human-centered design. As the product is a medical device according to MDR, we were also responsible for the usability file according to DIN EN 62366. As part of this, we carried out various formative tests and a final summative test with test subjects to ensure the usability of the product, consisting of the seat, ceramic, app, packaging and QuickGuide.
