FAUN - Control System

HMI design for FAUN garbage trucks
All central vehicle functions on one display in the drivers cab:
For the FAUN Control System, BUSSE developed a user-centered HMI concept for a 12.3-inch touch display. It combines cameras, assistance systems, and body functions directly at the drivers workplace – for a clear, safe, and internationally understandable operation in the demanding working environment of modern refuse collection vehicles.

Initial situation & challenge
Complex technology. Little time. High responsibility.
In the use of waste collection vehicles, drivers and loaders must react correctly in seconds. Camera images, assistance systems, chassis functions, and body controls operate simultaneously – often under time pressure, in darkness, and in tight urban streets.
The challenge: From many individual functions, a central operating concept should emerge that reduces cognitive load, prioritizes safety-relevant information, and remains intuitively understandable during ongoing operations.
Procedure
Human Centered Design – developed close to real operations
BUSSE developed the HMI concept according to the Human Centered Design Process: understand, structure, design, test, and iteratively improve.
For this purpose, the team analyzed real work situations directly on site. Our UX and HMI designers accompanied shifts in darkness, under time pressure, and in narrow streets to understand the usage context, operating routines, and critical decision moments.
Based on these insights, information architecture, operating logic, initial wireframes, and interactive click dummies were created. The concepts were iteratively tested and further developed with real users.

Solution
A clear operating logic for live operation
The new HMI concept is based on a clear 2-level logic:
Level 1 supports live operation.
Camera images, assistance displays, and central functions remain visible and quickly accessible at all times.
Level 2 bundles deeper settings.
System configurations and rarely used functions consciously recede into the background during driving and charging operations.
A high-contrast UI design, a language-neutral icon world, and a consistent design system create orientation, recognizability, and international understandability. This results in an interface that represents complex vehicle functions in a reduced manner, without losing important information.

Result & Value
+More Safety: BirdView surround view and AI object recognition (FAUN-AI Cube) prevent accidents in the maneuvering area.
+ Clear Operating Logic: Situational menu guidance reduces distraction. Lights, tipper, and chassis remain within reach.
+ Higher Efficiency: Shorter response times and fewer operating errors under stress.
+ One Platform: All subsystems and assistance displays on a central display.
Complex technology. Easy to use.
“BUSSE is our design game-changer for piste vehicles! Your UI/UX team raises not only the icons and layout but the entire user experience to a new level. Clear operation makes every ride a pleasure. Reliable by our side from development to series production.” PRINOTH
