WANZL - the future of shopping at Euroshop 2023

Products from WANZL set quality standards all over the world. Thus, WANZL has become one of the leading international partners of the global trade and has long since carried the quality brand concept MADE BY WANZL into new application areas of other industries. At this year's Euroshop, the latest product innovations from WANZL were presented. For some of them we were able to contribute the operating concept as well as the graphical implementation in the area of UI / UX design. This has contributed to concepts such as the Smart Trolley, the Hybridloc App, the Smartfix NFC, the SmartBasket and a Self-Check-Out System (SCO).

WANZL has been the engine of retail since 1947. The company started as a manufacturer of wire shopping carts and today is an innovative pacesetter for retail solutions worldwide. As a total solution provider, WANZL realizes unique shopping experiences. These can be innovative products such as smart shopping carts and goods presentation systems, digital solutions, but also creative store concepts such as 24/7 stores and fulfillment formats. In addition, the company's core competencies include individual logistics solutions from the Material Handling business segment, fully automated access and visitor management systems from the Access Solutions business segment, and premium products for airports and hotels from the Airport and Hotel Services business segments.

For this year's Euroshop trade fair in Düsseldorf, the 11-member UI / UX design team was able to support the WANZL team in the user-centered implementation of the following software components:

Smart Trolley

To be able to record the purchase as soon as the goods are placed in the shopping cart and thus almost completely dispense with the time-consuming check-out: Wouldn't that be ideal? The Smart Trolley from WANZL realizes this vision in a simple way. Using the integrated scanner, customers record the individual items they take from the shelves and obtain a complete overview of their purchases and the final amount to be paid with the display integrated in the handle. Artificial intelligence monitors whether scanned and inserted items match. Customers and operators save time and effort because there is no need to wait and repack at the checkout.

Hybridloc / WANZL App

Thanks to extensive smartphone use, coin-regulated removal and delivery of shopping carts is likely to diminish soon. The hybrid lock and the associated operator app will additionally control the deposit system digitally in the future. The clear advantage for store operators is that using the app gives them another channel through which they can automatically provide their customers with the information or advertising content they want even before they enter the store. Not least thanks to the original apps that many store operators now offer for use at the point of sale, the smartphone is also increasingly becoming an indispensable companion when shopping. With the SmartFix NFC, WANZL has developed a solution that allows customers to attach their smartphones to the handle bar of their shopping cart in a theft-proof manner. It also enables the use of a camera for Scan&Go applications.

A digital prototype has been created to demonstrate the showcase.

Smart Basket

As a recognized specialist for shopping carts and baskets, WANZL has developed one of the first intelligent shopping baskets with its Smart-Basket. The control center of the SmartBasket is its permanently installed scan module with integrated display. With this, the purchases of the customers can be recorded by their own hand already during the insertion into the shopping basket. The modular approach of the SmartBasket allows an individual upgrade or downgrade.

SCO-Solution with Exit Gate

The combined solution of Exit Gate and SCO is the perfect combination to make the best use of small spaces and provide customers with a smooth checkout process. In addition, the necessary components, installation effort and on-site preparations are reduced to a minimum.
